Active Speakers FAQ
The best way to think of the difference between passive and active speakers, is that active speakers are more of an all-in-one speaker.
Active speakers have amplifiers built in, and do not require an external amplifier or receiver. The active crossover is placed before the amplifiers in an active speaker.
Passive speakers do not have a built-in amplifier so require an external amplifier or receiver. The crossover is passive and placed between the speaker terminals that connect the amplifier and the driver.
In most cases, they cannot.
Because everything that is needed to use an active speaker to its full potential is already built into the product, it is impossible to have one act as a passive speaker which has far more external parts.
